Eventful race results in runoff| 12/9/13

Nearly 100 volunteers crowded San Diego City Councilman David Alvarez’s backyard, his temporary campaign headquarters, in Barrio Logan to kick off his mayoral campaign on Sept. 14th.

“We are San Diego! We are San Diego!” the group of volunteers cheered after Alvarez gave a speech thanking volunteers for their support.

“It’s going to be a lot of work, but we know how to work hard,” Alvarez said. “The reason why we’re doing this is because we’re really at a crossroads in San Diego. It’s going to be very clear that we can either move backwards or move forward.”read more

Dia de los Muertos| 10/31/13 

During the last days of October, people in Mexico begin to prepare for an important visit. For generations, food, pictures, flowers, crucifixes, colorful skulls and mementos have been used to decorate altars that commemorate loved ones who have passed on. Legend and tradition tell that during the first two days of November, the dead return to the mortal world to visit those they have left behind and join in on a celebration of life and death.

With summer coming to an end, the autumn leaves will soon start to turn yellow and the air will get a little bit chillier. Flip-flops will be substituted with boots and sweatshirts will become the uniform among Aztecs on campus. Even though it may be hard to imagine a cold night in sunny San Diego, it is a harsh reality for thousands of people in the city.

The San Diego County Regional Task Force on the Homeless (RTFH), an independent nonprofit, keeps count of the homeless people in San Diego. Their most recent report shows there are a total of 8,879 homeless people in the county. First Steps for a Big Baby| 6/28/10

The baby elephant at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park was soaking wet, walking side by side with his mother after they bathed in the pool together for the first time.

Park visitors can watch the mother-son relationship thrive as he goes through plenty of firsts as he grows and develops.

A month after his birth, the unnamed elephant is recovering from complications. Zookeepers are relieved and have welcomed the big bundle of joy with open arms.
